Kia ora. Welcome to KatyPie.com. KatyPie (a ‘sweet’ pseudonym to Anglicise the Maori phrase) is a contemporary New Zealand Maori artist living in Auckland. She creates her own original kowhaiwhai designs to tell stories and convey emotions. Her designs offer new interest and innovation to the art of painted rafter patterns, traditionally painted in wharenui (Maori meeting houses).

NEWS

May 2010 – KatyPie is a recipient of the Smash Palace Fund for 2010, funded by Creative New Zealand and MoRST (the Ministry of Research, Science and Technology). The fund exists to support collaborative projects between artists and scientists. With the help of this fund KatyPie is creating ‘living’ or kinetic kowhaiwhai paintings using artificial muscle technology. These kinetic paintings were well received at an artificial muscle conference in San Diego, USA in March this year. See the blog to view the progress of the art project.
